In The Beginning...
Foundational Study in Genesis
Day 2
Gen 1:6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide
the waters from the waters.
Gen 1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament
from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
Gen 1:8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
The Firmament
![]()
On the Second Day, God created the firmament. The Hebrew word used here
is
(pronounced: rah-key-yah),
which means expanse, such as an arc in the sky.
The word Heaven is
(pronounced:
shah-my-yeem), which means sky or space (as in outer space, where the planets
and other celestial
bodies are.)
It was to divide the waters under it from the waters above it. The thought here is that what He created was a water canopy around our “glob of gelatin”, which would have been under Heaven. And then placed waters above Heaven. That would have put those waters in outer space!
Bear in mind – there still was no Earth – so the waters under the sky were not on the earth, since it hadn’t yet been created.
Light Before Stars
There was light, but still nothing to send the light. If you had looked up into the night sky on the second day of creation though, you would have seen moon, the stars and the constellations, even though God hadn’t yet put the actual stars in place yet!
During the day, you would have seen the Sun, but again - the Sun hadn't been created yet!
